USDA reports more H5N1 avian influenza outbreaks in poultry farms in nine states, including Ohio, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Indiana. In Ohio, layer farms are among those affected. The Iowa Department of Agriculture reported an outbreak in a turkey flock in Buena Vista county.
Backyard flocks in Delaware, Michigan, Minnesota, Wyoming, and New York have also been detected with the virus. Since 2022, outbreaks have led to the loss of 159 million birds nationwide.
Wisconsin has noted detections of wild birds testing positive for H5 avian flu, including a merganser from Milwaukee County. The state has urged the public to avoid handling wild birds due to the risk of transmission.
