Several brands of canned tuna have been recalled due to the potential for botulism, a fatal form of food poisoning. The affected products were sold in stores like H-E-B, Trader Joe’s, Publix, and Costco.
Tri-Union Seafoods announced a voluntary recall on several of its canned tuna products, citing a manufacturing defect in the cans’ “easy open” pull tab feature as the issue. The affected products were delivered to multiple states under various labels, including H-E-B, Trader Joe’s, Genova, and Van Camp’s.
Consumers should not use the recalled products even if they don’t seem spoiled. No illnesses have been reported so far, but consumers can return the product for a refund or throw it out. If you suspect you consumed an affected tuna, watch for signs of potential foodborne illness such as upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, and bloody stool.
The FDA has posted a list of impacted products on its website. To check if your purchase is affected, look at the universal product code (UPC) and best-by date on the can and compare it with the impacted list. If you have concerns or are experiencing symptoms, consult with your doctor immediately.
