Protesters in Serbia held parallel rallies on Saturday, with striking students and supporters of populist President Aleksandar Vucic taking to the streets to mark a major holiday. The student-led protest is part of a nationwide anti-graft movement that has gained momentum after a train station collapse killed 15 people in November.
The rallies in central Kragujevac drew tens of thousands of protesters, who demanded justice for the victims and an end to rampant corruption. Unlike President Vucic’s supporters, they called for officials to respect the rule of law and tackle endemic corruption.
The protests are a response to growing public discontent with the country’s politics and institutions, as calls for fundamental changes in the Balkan state continue to rise. The incident at the Novi Sad train station is seen as a catalyst for these movements.
