Austria Stabbing: 14-Year-Old Boy Killed, Six Attacked by Suspect

A 23-year-old Syrian national with legal residence in Austria has stabbed six people, including a 14-year-old boy who died from his injuries, in the city of Villach on Saturday. The attacker was stopped by a witness, a food delivery driver, who drove into him with their vehicle.

The victims were all male and aged between 14 and 32. Two suffered serious injuries, two minor injuries, and one died. A sixth person, also a man, was injured in the attack. Police have not yet determined a motive but are investigating the suspect’s background.

Such attacks are rare in Austria, with the country’s deadliest assault occurring in 2020 when a jihadist carried out a shooting rampage that killed four people. Carinthia governor Peter Kaiser expressed sympathy for the victim’s family and called for harsh consequences for those who break the law.

Austria’s interior minister is expected to visit Villach on Sunday. The suspect, a Syrian national, is being detained, but it’s unclear whether he was acting alone or with others. Police are continuing their investigation.
