Amazon Facility in Garner Votes Down Unionization Effort

A union vote at the Amazon facility in Garner, North Carolina, has failed to pass with a majority of workers voting against unionization. The vote, which began on February 10, saw 829 workers cast their ballots in favor of joining the union and 2,447 workers opposed.

Amazon’s spokesperson stated that they are pleased with the outcome, saying it was an opportunity for employees to have their voices heard. However, organizers from Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity and Empowerment (CAUSE) expressed disappointment but vowed not to stop organizing.

“We won’t be defeated,” said CAUSE member Italo Medelius. “We know we have a significant number of supporters inside the building, which gives us momentum to regroup and continue our fight for better working conditions and wages.”

The union had been pushing for higher benefits and a $30-an-hour wage, citing the rising cost of living in the Triangle area as a reason for their demands. Amazon employees Benny Koval echoed this sentiment, stating that workers deserve respect and a safe workplace despite being part of a large corporation.

Despite the initial outcome, CAUSE remains committed to its cause, emphasizing that the fight for better working conditions and wages is far from over.
