Hong Kong has launched a naming contest for its two giant panda cubs, “Elder Sister” and “Younger Brother”, ahead of their public debut at Ocean Park on Sunday. The contest aims to give the cubs official names, as fans have been affectionately referring to them as such since their birth in December.
According to Paulo Pong Kin-yee, park chairman, the launch of the cubs has led to a 30% year-on-year increase in income over the Christmas period. He hopes that the new cubs will bring further business boost to the facility. The names “Elder Sister” and “Younger Brother” were chosen informally by fans to distinguish between the two, but the park is now seeking official names for the bears.
