The highly anticipated Marvel movie, Captain America: Brave New World, has finally arrived in theaters after a 7-year hiatus since its last theatrical release. The film marks a significant change for the franchise with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as the new Captain America. Despite the promising box office projections of $90 million or more, there is no immediate streaming option available.
The previous experiment with day-and-date releases, which Disney attempted with Black Widow in 2021, ended in disappointment. The film’s simultaneous release on Disney+ and in theaters led to a significant decline in its second-weekend box office numbers. Scarlett Johansson even sued the studio over this issue, eventually receiving $40 million.
In contrast, Marvel Studios has moved away from day-and-date releases, instead opting for an exclusive theatrical run. Even when a film performs poorly at the box office, it is more lucrative to maintain control and delay streaming. The most recent MCU film, Deadpool & Wolverine, took just under three months to reach Disney+, which may have contributed to its success.
For Captain America: Brave New World, its real test begins in its second week of release when we’ll see how much business it will shed. With the movie now playing in theaters, fans can look forward to enjoying it on the big screen before potentially streaming it later.
