A car ramming attack in Munich’s southern German city left three dead, including a two-year-old girl, and 39 injured. The incident occurred on Thursday when a car crashed into a group of people carrying out a token strike by the trade union Verdi.
The suspected perpetrator, an Afghan citizen with a valid German residency and work permit, was detained at the scene. Authorities believe he had “Islamist motive” behind the attack, but there is no evidence linking it to any terrorist organizations.
German authorities have vowed to impose harsh penalties on the suspect. Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited the scene of the incident, calling for unity and condemning the attack. He stated that anyone committing such an act must expect severe consequences, including deportation after serving their sentence if they do not hold a right of residence in Germany.
