Danish intelligence has issued a warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin is increasingly willing to challenge NATO and could spark a major war within Europe in the next five years. Despite suffering significant losses since launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Putin’s ambitions for redefining European power dynamics persist.
The Danish intelligence service reported on three potential scenarios regarding Russian aggression, including that if the Ukrainian conflict ends, Russia will refocus its efforts on challenging NATO. The organization has warned that Russia could remilitarize quickly and change its objective, posing a significant threat to neighboring countries.
Experts believe that Russia’s priority has shifted towards rearmament and rebuilding its forces, with a potential plan for another military campaign in the near future. A report by Denmark’s intelligence service notes that economic support from China and military aid from North Korea and Iran are contributing to Russia’s efforts to free up resources for NATO.
The warning comes as US President Donald Trump’s ambivalence towards NATO has raised concerns among European security experts. Anders Puck Nielsen, a military expert, suggests that Putin may feel emboldened to attack the security organization if its deterrence is undermined in Europe.
As tensions rise, Denmark’s intelligence chief, Anja Dalsgaard Nielsen, warned that there is currently no Russian threat to her country but emphasized that this could change soon. The warning highlights the growing concern among European nations about Russia’s intentions and the need for increased cooperation and vigilance.
