EU Needs Special Envoy for Ukraine Peace Talks

European Union leaders are calling for a special envoy to join Ukraine peace talks with Russia. Finnish President Alexander Stubb made the request during the Munich Security Conference, citing the need for European focus and voice in negotiations.

Stubb compared Europe’s involvement to its efforts in Kosovo, where a similar envoy played a key role. He proposed a deputy envoy at a comparable level to US special envoy Keith Kellogg.

The move comes amid reported talks between US officials and Russian representatives in Saudi Arabia, which have left Kyiv feeling excluded from the process. Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic echoed Stubb’s call for a strong European representative in negotiations, saying it was needed to manage peace talks with authority.
