The Saugus High School shooting occurred on November 14, 2019, claiming the lives of students Gracie Muehlberger and Dominic Blackwell. A 16-year-old student opened fire on campus, killing five others and himself before taking his own life. Detective Dan Finn, who responded to the scene without backup, helped find the victims and shooter.
Gracie Muehlberger was remembered by loved ones as “energetic,” “caring,” and “full of life.” Her father said that sharing videos and stories about her life has helped people understand her impact on their lives. Dominic Blackwell was known for his joy and energy with everyone he encountered, inspiring those around him.
In the years following the shooting, the community came together to support the victims’ families. Local efforts, including a virtual ceremony and a “Saugus Strong” movement, honored the victims and promoted gun reform. Students, such as Katie Rey, who was just a freshman at the time of the incident, have found ways to cope with their emotions through music and advocacy.
The city and school district continue to remember and honor the victims. The 2023 Saugus High School seniors were among the last students to experience the incident firsthand. A “Saugus Strong” web page was created to reflect on the shooting and its aftermath, providing a resource for those seeking information.
