At least 15 people were killed in a crowd crush at New Delhi’s main railway station on Saturday, with several children among the victims. The tragedy occurred when passengers waiting to board trains to Prayagraj city for the Hindu Maha Kumbh festival suddenly surged into the crowded platforms.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as injured passengers were rushed to hospital. A survivor of the crush said he and his family had arrived at the station, only to find themselves caught up in a pushing crowd that caused fatal injuries.
The delay of two trains was cited as a contributing factor by Deputy Police Commissioner K P S Malhotra, who announced that an inquiry into the incident would be launched. The country’s railway minister also expressed condolences for the victims’ families and ordered an investigation into the tragic event.
