A Quebec man, Alain Roy, has announced that he is selling his two Tesla vehicles and cancelling his order for a Cybertruck due to his growing dissatisfaction with CEO Elon Musk. The decision comes after Musk’s inauguration day gesture was misinterpreted as a Nazi salute, which Roy believes was the final straw.
Roy, who had previously been a fan of Musk’s innovative ideas, now says he can no longer support Tesla due to Musk’s alignment with US President Donald Trump and his promotion of far-right groups. The tech billionaire has faced criticism for his comments on Canadian politics, including praising Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation and dismissing him online.
While some have defended Tesla as a company that employs thousands of brilliant people, Roy believes the CEO’s views outweigh any benefits he sees in owning a Tesla. “It really comes down to the product,” said Gad Elmoznino from Club Tesla Quebec. However, Roy argues that Musk’s actions will not change his behavior and that boycotting Tesla is unlikely to affect him personally.
The trend of boycotting Tesla amid Musk’s entry into US politics has been accelerated by the sale of bumper stickers reading “I bought this before Elon went crazy.” The company’s sales have slumped in Europe, the UK, and Australia, with its stock price dropping 30% from its all-time high in December.
