Elon Musk Unveils AI Model Grok 3 with Enhanced Capabilities and Reasoning Features

Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has released its latest flagship AI model, Grok 3, which boasts enhanced capabilities and reasoning features compared to its predecessor, Grok 2. The new model is designed to analyze images and respond to questions, powering a number of features on Musk’s social network, X.

Grok 3 was developed using an enormous data center in Memphis with around 200,000 GPUs, yielding “10x” more computing power than Grok 2. The expanded training data set includes court case filings, which Musk claims has made the model “an order of magnitude more capable.”

The new model comes with a range of features, including a smaller version called Grok 3 mini, which responds to questions more quickly but at the cost of some accuracy. Other models and related features are still in beta.

xAI claims that Grok 3 beats rival models on benchmarks such as AIME and GPQA. The model’s reasoning capabilities have been touted as superior, with Grok 3 Reasoning surpassing the best version of OpenAI’s o3-mini on several popular benchmarks.

Grok 3 will be available to X subscribers first, with access gated behind a new plan called SuperGrok, priced at $30 per month or $300 per year. The model will also gain a “voice mode” in the near future and be available via xAI’s enterprise API.

Musk has pledged to open-source Grok 2 once it is fully out, but has faced criticism for the AI model’s past behavior on sensitive topics like politics and transgender rights. It remains to be seen whether xAI has achieved its goal of making Grok closer to politically neutral.
