The US state of Wyoming has confirmed its first human case of H5N1 bird flu. A woman, with underlying health conditions, is currently hospitalized in another state after being exposed to the virus through direct contact with an infected poultry flock at her home.
According to Alexia Harrist, Wyoming’s state health officer, this marks the third hospitalization case in the US related to the infection. Since April last year, nearly 70 people have been infected, resulting in one death, mostly among farm workers exposed to infected poultry or cows.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that the risk of infection to the general public is low. Meanwhile, the USDA has granted conditional approval for a bird flu vaccine by Zoetis to be used in poultry.
