Saturday’s “SNL50: The Anniversary Special” brought back memories of the beloved NBC sketch show with a nostalgic lineup of classic characters and sketches. Although it was impossible to include all favorites, some inarguably iconic moments were showcased.
The special featured reunions like Dana Carvey as Wayne’s World’s Wayne Campbell alongside Dana Carvey, and Kristen Wiig reprising her popular “Target Lady” character. Additionally, the anniversary special included other classic characters such as Marcello Hernández’s suave Domingo, who introduced his “hot brothers.”
A notable absence was Chris Kattan/Mr. Peepers, who was missed by fans. However, some of the most iconic sketches and characters were highlighted during the celebration.
Some of the notable highlights include Kristen Wiig’s Target Lady sharing weird comments to customers at checkout, Dana Carvey playing his Church Lady, and Kate McKinnon teaming up with Ana Gasteyer for their “Whiskers R We” pun-loving feline duo. The special also featured a memorable appearance by Eddie Murphy as Gumby.
The absence of some cast members was noticeable, including Bill Hader’s “Californians,” which was supposed to be part of the show but was replaced due to scheduling conflicts. Cheri Oteri and Will Ferrell were also absent from their respective characters in the Spartan Cheerleaders sketch.
Despite the notable absences, Saturday’s special still delivered on its promise as a nostalgic celebration of SNL’s rich history.
