Barcelona moved to the top of La Liga after a 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano, thanks to Robert Lewandowski’s penalty in the first half. The Blaugrana leapfrogged Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid to claim the summit, as Hans-Dieter Flick’s side secured all three points at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.
Lewandowski, who has now scored his 20th league goal of the season, stepped up to take the penalty after Pathe Cisse was wrestled to the ground in the penalty area. The Polish striker’s effort rattled off the inside of the post, securing the crucial three points for Barcelona.
Rayo Vallecano had a few chances to equalize, but Szczesny made several key saves to keep the scoreline at 1-0. Raphinha also had a big chance to double Barcelona’s advantage, but he lifted his effort over the bar.
The win marks a significant shift in momentum for Barcelona, who sit on 51 points and are now just three points behind leaders Villarreal. The Yellow Submarine will be eager to maintain their lead when they face Rayo Vallecano next weekend.
