Oscar Nominee Brady Corbet Reveals Zero Income from His Film

Filmmaker and director Brady Corbet spoke candidly about the financial struggles of making a film on Marc Maron’s podcast WTF. The Oscar nominee, currently nominated for writing, directing, and Best Picture at the upcoming Academy Awards, revealed that his film “The Brutalist” has earned him zero dollars in income. Despite critical praise and prestigious accolades, Corbet and his wife Mona Fastvold had to rely on a paycheck from three years ago to make ends meet.

Corbet likened the promotional process for his film to an “interrogation,” citing press interviews, constant travel, and working weekends as major time drains. He has been promoting the film for six months without a day off since Christmas break. This is not a unique issue, as Corbet has spoken to other filmmakers who are struggling to pay their rent due to lack of income from their films.

Corbet stepped behind the camera after years of acting and made his directorial debut with “The Childhood of a Leader” in 2015. His latest film, “The Brutalist,” took eight years to develop and film, making it his third feature-length project. The film is now in theaters, earning Corbet recognition for supporting stars like Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones.
