EE BAFTA Awards: ‘Conclave’ Takes Home Top Prize

“Conclave”, a thriller about the selection of a new pope starring Ralph Fiennes, won the top prize at the 2024 EE British Academy Film Awards. The film beat out “Anora,” a dramedy with Sean Baker as one of its stars, and “The Brutalist,” directed by Brady Corbet and starring Adrien Brody. This victory marks a significant shift in momentum for “Conclave” after it only secured one Golden Globe earlier this year.

The win could have implications for the Oscars, which are scheduled to take place on March 2, as there is overlap between the voting bodies of both awards. The BAFTAs and Oscars often have similar winners, making “Conclave”‘s triumph a notable development in the awards season.

“Conclave”‘s director Edward Berger accepted the award with humility, thanking his cast and crew for their hard work. The film took home four prizes at the ceremony, including best editing and outstanding British film. Ralph Fiennes was nominated for best leading actor but lost to Adrien Brody of “The Brutalist.”
