Meet Kenneth Williams, Mississippi’s Smashburger Sensation

Kenneth Williams, a father of four and husband to Janice, has taken his passion for cooking into a successful business venture – Skenny Burgers. The couple discovered their secret to creating mouthwatering smashburgers after watching a YouTube recipe on “Late Night Smashed Cheeseburger!” Kenneth’s experience as a trumpet player in Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of the South marching band led him to name his burger joint after his nickname, Skenny.

Williams’ love affair with burgers began when he was younger and didn’t like thick, grilled burgers. He discovered the smashburger method while working on perfecting his recipe for two years. The family business has gained popularity at markets and events, including Magnolia Sunset Markets, where they sell their signature smashburgers and fries.

The couple’s goal is to have a brick-and-mortar location within five years, expanding across the state. Skenny Burgers aims to provide “premium ‘smash-style’ burgers for all seeking ultimate burger nirvana.” With their homemade special sauce and family involvement, Williams hopes his business will not only be successful but also bring happiness to customers.

As an entrepreneur, Williams faces challenges securing funding, especially as a minority business owner. However, he attributes the success of Skenny Burgers to hard work and a “bootstrap type” approach. The couple is committed to balancing their day jobs with their burger business, making time for family and friends along the way.

Skenny Burgers will be at the Bean Barn’s Night Market on Nov. 24, 2024, in Jackson, Miss., and at Capitol City Lights in December. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram @SkennyBurgers to learn more about their story and mouthwatering burgers.
