Captain America: Brave New World Stays Power Despite Mixed Reviews

Marvel’s fourth “Captain America” installment has proven that the studio hasn’t lost its mojo with a strong $100 million domestic debut over Presidents Day weekend and $192.4 million global tally. The film, which marks Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as the new Captain America, has delivered broad appeal across demographics, with 35% of opening weekend ticket buyers being Caucasian, 26% Latino and Hispanic, 23% Black, and 10% Asian.

Despite dismal reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the film boasts an 80% “verified audience score” on the platform. CinemaScore exit polls showed a weaker reception, but sources close to the superhero adaptation believe these grades may not accurately reflect moviegoer sentiment.

Premium formats, such as Imax and Dolby, accounted for 44% of inaugural sales, helping offset declining attendance trends. Luxury movie theater chain Flix Brewhouse reported strong walk-up business despite negative reviews, citing the film’s “accessible” nature and clear hook.

This performance is a welcome change after recent Marvel misfires like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels.” Disney CEO Bob Iger announced a company-wide focus on quality over quantity following the pandemic, which led to increased releases without corresponding quality. The success of “Deadpool & Wolverine” in 2023 demonstrated that Marvel can regain its footing.

With three more MCU titles scheduled for release this year, including “Thunderbolts” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” Hollywood is banking on Marvel’s return to form to revive the superhero genre. Industry analyst Jeff Bock notes that Marvel’s slate is a bright spot in the crowded February calendar, with no other film opening to over $100 million in the month.
