Jim Jones, the head of the FDA’s food division, has resigned after 89 staff members were laid off under his leadership, citing a desire to pursue an agenda championed by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Jones’ resignation letter stated that the layoffs would “undermine the agenda” he was tasked with promoting, which aimed to reduce diet-related chronic disease and risks from chemicals in food. He criticized the Trump administration’s treatment of FDA staff, calling it “disdain for the people necessary to implement” the agency’s goals.
The FDA press office declined to comment on Jones’ resignation. Environmental Working Group advocate Scott Faber condemned the layoffs, saying they would be a “huge step backward for the FDA and the safety of our food.”
