The New York Golf Club (NYGC) secured its first win of the inaugural TGL season with a convincing 10-3 victory over Tiger Woods and Jupiter Links Golf Club on Tuesday at SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Rickie Fowler, Cameron Young, and Matt Fitzpatrick propelled NYGC to a strong start, while Woods, Tom Kim, Kevin Kisner, and Jupiter dropped to the same record.
The match marked Woods’ return to golf after taking a break following his mother’s death earlier this month. Despite leading his team, he was unable to secure a win and acknowledged the mistake on live broadcast. The match’s format, which included triples and singles matches, kept things entertaining for fans, who were eager to see Woods back in action.
NYGC took an early lead, with Fowler answering a birdie by Wood with one of his own. However, Jupiter gained momentum late in the match after Kim made a crucial putt on the final hole of the triples format. The New York Mets’ Pete Alonso provided pre-match motivation for Jupiter before they jumped out to a 8-0 lead.
Woods’ misfortune came when he pulled out a wedge and hit it short on the 13th hole, resulting in laughter from his teammates. Despite this, JLGC still showed signs of enjoyment in the new TGL format, which has kept golf under the spotlight despite weekday tournaments.
NYGC’s win sets the stage for an exciting inaugural season, while Jupiter looks to bounce back from a disappointing start.
