Winter weather has led to school closures across the Memphis area, with several districts canceling classes for Wednesday, February 19. The National Weather Service expects around 1-3 inches of snow and sleet accumulation, with temperatures in the mid-20s on Wednesday.
Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) canceled after-school activities and a school board meeting on Tuesday, but announced its closure decision just before 6 p.m. Other municipal school districts in Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland, and Millington also made similar announcements.
The University of Memphis and Christian Brothers University have shifted to remote classes due to the weather. The university’s Lambuth campus in Jackson is canceled, but the women’s basketball game against UAB will continue as planned.
Charter schools and private schools are independent and not bound by MSCS’ decision. This marks the first snow day for the region since January 10, when about 7 inches of snow covered roads in the Mid-South.
