Brazil’s prosecutor-general has formally charged former President Jair Bolsonaro with attempting a coup to stay in office after his 2022 election defeat. Bolsonaro allegedly agreed to a plan to poison current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and shoot down Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who opposes him.
The charges, based on 884-page report filed by Federal Police last November, detail a scheme to undermine the democratic system. The alleged plot involved spreading distrust of the electoral system, drafting a decree to make it seem legitimate, pressuring top military officials, and inciting riots.
Bolsonaro denies wrongdoing, saying he has “no concerns” about the accusations. His defence team calls the indictment “empty” and claims Bolsonaro never agreed to any movement aimed at dismantling democracy.
If convicted, Bolsonaro faces up to 20 years in prison for attempting a coup and abolishing democratic rule. The case is seen as historic by some experts, who expect the Supreme Court to accept the charges and put Bolsonaro on trial before the end of next year.
