The US is experiencing its worst flu season since 2009, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The current 2024-25 influenza season has seen a significant increase in illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths. As of February 8, 2025, the CDC reported 29 million illnesses, 370,000 hospitalizations, and 16,000 deaths due to the flu.
The elderly and young children have been particularly vulnerable to the illness this season. In the past week alone, there were 11 influenza-associated pediatric deaths, bringing the total number of pediatric deaths for the season to 68. The CDC has classified this season as “high severity” for all age groups, a first since the 2017-18 season.
Some states are faring better than others in terms of flu outbreaks. According to the CDC’s Outpatient Respiratory Illness Activity Map, 36 states and the District of Columbia are currently listed in the “very-high” category, indicating high rates of respiratory illness. Nine states are classified as “high”, two as “moderate”, one as “low”, and two as “minimal”.
While it is impossible to fully protect oneself from the flu, the CDC recommends getting vaccinated with a flu shot, especially for those at higher risk. Other steps to take include avoiding contact with people who have the flu and washing your hands regularly.
