South Korean actress Kim Sae-ron was found dead at her home in Seoul on Sunday, nearly two years after she stepped back from the public eye following a drunk driving conviction. She was 24.
The discovery of Kim’s body was made by a friend, according to police, who reported no signs of foul play. The circumstances surrounding her death are currently under investigation.
Kim began her acting career as a child and gained recognition for roles in films like “A Brand New Life” and “The Man from Nowhere.” Her last known role was in the 2023 K-drama “Bloodhounds.” A friend paid tribute to Kim on Instagram, writing “May you rest in peace.”
Recent deaths of young K-pop idols and K-drama stars have highlighted concerns about mental health in South Korea’s entertainment industry. The highly competitive nature of K-entertainment, combined with public scrutiny and expectations of perfection, has been cited as contributing factors.
Entertainment agencies have introduced support systems, including counseling services and flexible schedules, but observers say more needs to be done to address the pressures faced by stars like Kim Sae-ron.
