Justin Turner Signs with Chicago Cubs on 1-Year Deal

Former Seattle Mariners first baseman Justin Turner has agreed to a $6 million, one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs. The deal includes an additional $2.5 million in bonuses. Turner played for the Mariners last season, hitting .264 with five home runs and seven doubles in 48 games.

The Cubs need depth at third base, where rookie Matt Shaw is dealing with a left oblique injury. Turner can back up first baseman Michael Busch and bat in the lineup at designated hitter. The 40-year-old veteran played for Toronto and Seattle last season, hitting .259 with 11 homers and 55 RBIs.

“I think he’s someone that we can really learn a lot from,” Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson said of Turner. “He’s just such a pro at what he does.” The Cubs added outfielder Kyle Tucker and relievers Ryan Pressly and Ryan Brasier in the offseason, following an offseason pattern of adding World Series winners.

Turner has played for multiple teams, including the Dodgers and Red Sox, with a career .270 hitter and 198 homers. He made his major league debut with Baltimore in 2009 and will report to big league camp after signing the minor league contract.
