The Chicago Cubs have agreed on a one-year, $6 million contract with free agent corner infielder Justin Turner, pending a physical. Turner, 40, spent last season splitting time between Toronto and Seattle, posting a .354 on-base percentage and hitting 11 home runs.
Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer acknowledged that adding a veteran player was a priority for the team, citing the importance of fortifying the roster and addressing potential weaknesses. The signing provides insurance at first base, where rookie Matt Shaw is expected to start, and fills a need for a backup infielder.
Turner joins his seventh organization after playing for the Dodgers, where he was a two-time All-Star and finished in the top 15 in MVP voting three times. He has also appeared in 86 postseason games, which could be an attractive asset for the Cubs as they aim to make their first playoff appearance since 2020.
Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson praised Turner’s experience and work ethic, stating that he would be a valuable addition to the team. The signing was confirmed by ESPN sources on Tuesday. Additionally, the Cubs announced a minor league deal with right-handed pitcher Chris Flexen.
