Rocket Lab Successfully Launches Gen-3 Satellite into Orbit

Rocket Lab has successfully launched a high-resolution Earth-imaging satellite, the first “Gen-3” model for Blacksky, into low Earth orbit. The Electron vehicle carrying the satellite lifted off from Rocket Lab’s New Zealand site at 6:17 p.m. EST on February 18 and deployed the satellite into a circular orbit approximately 292 miles above Earth about 55 minutes later. This is Rocket Lab’s ninth launch overall for Blacksky across multiple contracts since 2019, introducing high-resolution Gen-3 satellites that will enhance geospatial intelligence capabilities.

Rocket Lab’s mission named “Fasten Your Space Belts” marks the company’s second launch of 2025 and follows a total of 16 missions last year. The successful deployment confirms Rocket Lab’s 60th Electron launch. In a separate event, SpaceX launched a batch of its Starlink internet satellites just four minutes after Rocket Lab’s liftoff.

The Gen-3 satellite will enable Blacksky to enhance its geospatial intelligence capabilities with high-resolution imaging. This mission marks an important milestone in Rocket Lab’s continued growth and expansion as a launch services provider for the company.
