Ethan Hawke’s performance in the biographical musical drama “Blue Moon” at the Berlinale world premiere left the audience in awe. The film, which tells the story of American lyricist Lorenz Hart as he battles alcoholism and depression, was a critical success, with cheers erupting around the Palast for Linklater and his cast.
Hawke’s transformation into the 5-foot-tall Hart was particularly impressive, earning him praise from critics. He worked closely with director Richard Linklater on the project, which took 12 years to complete. Hawke revealed that he approached the role by considering music and visual simplicity, saying it was an “exercise in simplicity.”
Despite some challenges, including a superfan who interrupted his speech, Hawke’s performance received a standing ovation from the crowd. The film is now competing for the Golden Bear award and has been hailed as the festival’s first major hit of the year.
Sony Pictures Classics has acquired U.S. distribution rights for “Blue Moon,” with plans to release it in the fall.
