Do Women Really Need More Sleep?

A recent social media trend claims that women need several hours more sleep per night than men. However, experts say there is no scientific evidence to support this claim.

Dr. Suzanne Bertisch, a physician specializing in sleep disorders, states that “there is no evidence that there is a fundamental biological reason women need more sleep.” While it’s true that women tend to spend more time in bed each night, this doesn’t necessarily mean they require more sleep.

Research has shown that women experience lower quality sleep than men, with a 2023 survey finding that nearly twice as many women reported rarely or never waking up feeling well-rested. Several factors contribute to this disparity, including hormonal changes and caregiving responsibilities.

Progesterone levels, which are known to promote better sleep, drop before menstruation, leading to poorer sleep quality. Women also tend to take on more household chores and childcare duties, which can disrupt their sleep patterns.

Sleep disorders like insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome become more common in women as they age. However, it’s essential to note that the length of time spent sleeping is not indicative of the quality or quantity of sleep needed.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7-9 hours of sleep per night for adults. Tracking your sleep with a smartwatch or other device can be helpful, but the best way to determine if you’re getting enough sleep is by monitoring how you feel during the day. If you’re consistently tired or struggling to stay awake, it’s crucial to consult with a doctor.
