150+ Whales Stranded on Australian Beach Cry for Help

A mass stranding of over 150 false killer whales on a remote island beach in Tasmania has taken a devastating turn, with rescue efforts hindered by rough seas. The whales’ labored breathing and high-pitched cries can be heard in distressing videos filmed near the scene.

Initially, 157 whales were reported stranded, with 90 found alive. However, attempts to refloat two relocated whales failed due to strong currents and waves pushing them back to shore. Due to challenging weather forecasts for at least the next two days, authorities have decided euthanasia is necessary for animal welfare reasons.

The Marine Conservation Program has closed nearby areas to protect the public while responders work to address the situation. The cause of the mass stranding remains under investigation.
