New York State Dealing with Road Salt Shortage Amid Harsh Winter

The Town of Parma, known for its frequent lake-effect snow due to its proximity to Lake Ontario, is struggling to find enough road salt amidst a statewide shortage. Local highway superintendent Jim Christ expressed frustration over the dwindling supply and delivery delays from American Rock Salt.

Christ stated that the town’s usual 5,000-ton salt barn holds only about 100 tons, with the last shipment being delivered just before this week’s snowstorm. The state office of general services is assisting with delivery delays.

Other towns like Canandaigua and Victor are turning to local vendors like Apalachee Salt for supplies. American Rock Salt attributed the shortage to a long stretch of cold weather, while Apalachee denied claims that they are profiting from the shortage by selling salt at inflated prices. The company stated that they are simply responding to bid requests from the state and bidding on deliveries where American Rock has fallen short.

As the situation continues to unfold, local authorities are working to find a solution to ensure public safety during the harsh winter months.
