Uganda Declares End to Ebola Outbreak, No New Deaths Reported

Uganda has discharged its last eight patients who recovered from Ebola, according to health authorities. The World Health Organization described this milestone as a reflection of Uganda’s swift and coordinated response. Most Ebola patients were treated at the main referral facility in Kampala.

Health officials documented 265 contacts, with 90 completing a quarantine period. Since there are no approved vaccines for the Sudan strain, the country has launched a clinical study to test a trial vaccine’s safety and efficacy.

The last outbreak of Ebola in Uganda, which began in September 2022, killed at least 55 people. The virus is spread by contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated materials, causing symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, and internal bleeding.

Uganda joins other countries that have successfully controlled Ebola outbreaks, with scientists suspecting the first person infected acquires the virus through contact with an infected animal or eating its raw meat.
