The director of data science and engineering for the United States Digital Service (USDS) has resigned, citing “shortsighted” layoffs by Elon Musk’s rebranded organization. Anne Marshall, who had been in the role for just two months, made her decision after seeing one-third of USDS employees fired last week.
Marshall, a former Amazon engineer, joined USDS in September 2023 and was promoted to lead the data science and engineering team in December. However, she resigned on Wednesday, stating that DOGE’s actions were “ill-informed” and “indiscriminate.”
The layoffs came after DOGE fired around 50 product managers, designers, and others at USDS. The organization has since announced plans to merge the two teams, with those who remain as part of the DOGE team going forward.
The move is seen as a significant change for USDS, which had previously maintained separate teams. However, details on leadership remain unclear, with neither the administrator nor deputy administrator disclosed by representatives from DOGE or the White House.
