A mass vaccination campaign against polio in Gaza is set to resume on Saturday, targeting over half a million children. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the current environment in Gaza, with overcrowding and damaged infrastructure, creates ideal conditions for the spread of poliovirus.
The WHO statement said that recent population movement due to the ceasefire could exacerbate the spread of infection. Despite improved access for health workers since January 19, some areas remained inaccessible due to fighting, missing over 7,000 children from vaccination.
Recent samples tested positive for poliovirus in December and January, highlighting the ongoing circulation of the virus in the enclave. The WHO conducted two rounds of vaccinations last year, reaching over 95% of the target population.
