Ice Melt Restocked at Holden Store for Storm-Weary Customers

A weekend snowstorm left behind treacherous ice in parts of Central Massachusetts, causing anxiety among residents who struggled to find rock salt and other snow-melt products. However, relief arrived on Wednesday morning when 18 pallets of rock salt were delivered to Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Holden, addressing the shortage.

Residents, including Carmella Cardwell and Chris Brewer, took advantage of the shipment to tackle their icy driveways. Cardwell purchased eight bags to cover her 80-foot driveway, while Brewer bought only one bag to sprinkle at the base of his 150-foot driveway.

Store manager Darrin Oliveira attributed the delay in shipments to suppliers basing them on historical demand, resulting from mild winters in recent years. He noted that the new shipment was a welcome relief for customers, but warned that it may not be pet-friendly.

In contrast, Worcester’s public works department reported having ample salt and sand supplies, with daily deliveries maintaining stock levels. Meanwhile, meteorologist Francis Tarasiewicz predicted temperatures to remain below freezing on Thursday and Friday, which would help melt the existing ice sheets. Despite this, residents can expect lingering ice for the next couple of days before warmer weather arrives.
