FDA Head Resigns Amid Staff Firings Under Trump Administration

The head of the US Food & Drug Administration’s food division has resigned, citing “indiscriminate firing” of around 89 staff members. Deputy Commissioner Jim Jones said he could no longer continue in his role due to the Trump administration’s lack of support for efforts to improve public health and reduce diet-related diseases.

Among those fired were staff working on nutrition and infant formula safety, as well as employees reviewing potentially hazardous food ingredients. The resignations come amid a federal judge’s inquiry into billionaire Elon Musk’s authority and requests from 14 states to curb his power.

US District Judge Tanya Chutkan held a hearing on the request, which was made by Democratic attorneys general seeking to block DOGE from accessing sensitive data and firing employees at multiple federal agencies. The judge expressed skepticism about the request but said she would rule within 24 hours.
