Tesla Recalls 380,000 Vehicles Due to Power Steering Issue

Tesla is recalling nearly 380,000 vehicles in the US due to a power steering assist failure that could increase steering effort at low speeds, potentially leading to a crash. The recall follows a probe by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after owners reported steering failures.

According to Tesla, some Model 3 and Model Y sedans running older software may experience an overvoltage breakdown on the printed circuit board, which could cause motor drive components to overstress. This issue is not related to the vehicle’s motion, but when it stops, the steering assist may fail and remain disabled.

Tesla has identified over 3,000 warranty claims related to this condition, but so far, there have been no reported crashes or fatalities. The company has released an over-the-air software update to fix the issue.

This recall marks Tesla’s second major recall of 2024, following a January recall due to malfunctioning rear-view cameras. As a result, Tesla shares were slightly lower in premarket trading.
