FIFA Ban Stands: Rubiales Appeal Dismissed by Court

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) has dismissed Luis Rubiales’ appeal against his three-year FIFA ban, leaving the suspension in place. The former Spanish Football Federation president was found guilty of behaving “in a manner contrary to the principles of the Fifa Disciplinary Code” after kissing Spain player Jenni Hermoso without consent during the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup final medal ceremony.

Rubiales had been suspended from football-related activities for three years, following an investigation into the incident. He was convicted by Spain’s High Court and fined €10,800 in connection with the same incident. The court found Rubiales guilty of non-consensual kissing, while he maintained that the kiss was consensual.

Despite his resignation as RFEF president, Rubiales continues to dispute the kiss was consensual, and both he and Hermoso intend to appeal the verdict. However, Cas ruled that the imposed sanction is “reasonable and proportional” and agreed with FIFA’s appeals committee on the suspension.
