A new family of superconductors has been discovered, containing nickel, which can carry electricity without resistance at relatively high temperatures. Physicists at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) have grown crystals of nickel oxide in a laboratory and observed its key characteristics of superconductivity. The discovery is significant as it could lead to cheaper and more efficient technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging. Further research is needed to raise the critical temperature, but this breakthrough brings hope for the development of unconventional superconductors that can operate under ambient conditions.
