China’s President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed his confidence in the country’s economic growth, calling it an “east wind” that will carry China above its rivals. At a symposium with prominent entrepreneurs, Xi invoked a slogan from Mao Zedong, founder of the People’s Republic of China, to stress China’s position as a global economic leader.
In a 1950s-era phrase borrowed from classical literature, Mao described the eventual victory of socialism over capitalism. Xi echoed this sentiment, citing the scale and resilience of China’s economy. According to him, there is no other nation comparable in size and strength globally. The “east wind” will drive China’s economic success, according to Xi, highlighting his administration’s ongoing efforts to boost private-sector morale and stimulate economic growth.
