Former Spanish Football Federation President Found Guilty of Sexual Assault

Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish football federation, has been found guilty of sexual assault on Jenni Hermoso, a Spain forward, during the 2023 World Cup final medal ceremony. The verdict comes after a long and intense 550-day battle for justice.

Rubiales was convicted of planting a non-consensual kiss on Hermoso’s face and faces a fine of over €10,000, a ban from being within 200 meters of Hermoso, and €3,000 in compensation to the striker. However, he escaped a custodial sentence and was acquitted of coercion charges alongside three co-defendants.

The conviction marks a significant step forward for women’s rights in Spain, sending a powerful message about consent and the seriousness with which cases like this are taken. However, the price paid by Hermoso and her team has been heavy, with many questioning why the punishment seemed so light compared to Rubiales’ salary.

Hermoso, who is a World Cup winner and Spain’s record goalscorer, testified that the incident had “tainted one of the happiest days of my life” and that she had faced intense pressure and scrutiny. Her lawyer has announced plans to appeal the conviction.

The case highlights the ongoing struggles women face in Spain, particularly in patriarchal societies still influenced by machismo values. The new Sexual Consent law introduced in 2023 has been criticized for its unintended consequences, allowing many prisoners to have their sentences reduced.

As Rubiales appeals his conviction, many wonder what will happen to women who don’t have the same international profile as elite athletes and face a much lower chance of justice. The case serves as a reminder that there is still work to be done to ensure justice for all victims of sexual assault.
