OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has outlined a plan to release new AI models, GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, aiming to simplify the company’s product offerings and provide a more intuitive user experience. The company aims to unify its models, making it easier for users to access various AI tools.
GPT-4.5, internally known as “Orion,” will be the final non-chain-of-thought model with reasoning capabilities. GPT-5 will unify the company’s series of reasoning models with GPT-series models into a cohesive system. The goal is to create systems that can use all available tools and adapt to various tasks.
The free tier of ChatGPT will gain unlimited access to GPT-5, while Plus and Pro subscribers will get versions running at higher intelligence levels. Altman stated that the release of GPT-5 is “weeks/months” away.
This move follows OpenAI’s recent position as a leader in AI, challenged by Chinese startup DeepSeek’s open-source model R1. Altman praised R1 but acknowledged the need to reassess his company’s stance on open vs closed-source AI. He believes that being on the wrong side of history and needs to explore alternative strategies.
The roadmap for GPT-5 aims to provide a more streamlined approach, replacing the current model picker with an intuitive system “just works.”
