Pope Francis’ Condition Improving Slowly After Treatment for Pneumonia

Pope Francis, 88, is responding positively to medical treatment for pneumonia, according to a doctor at Gemelli hospital in Rome. Doctor Sergio Alfieri said the pope’s therapy needs time to work and he should not be considered “out of danger.” Francis will remain hospitalized for at least all of next week.

The pontiff has shown no loss of appetite and continues to eat regularly, as well as maintain his sense of humor. Once the acute part of the infection is treated, Francis can transition back home to Casa Santa Marta. The pope’s heart is holding up well, with no fever or oxygen required for breathing assistance.

Francis was initially hospitalized on February 14 due to a respiratory tract infection, which later turned out to be pneumonia in both lungs. As a young man, he suffered from severe pneumonia that led to the removal of part of his lung. In recent months, Francis has experienced two falls and undergone surgery for diverticulitis.

Despite being advised “complete rest,” Francis continues to hold phone calls with officials, including those in Gaza City. The pope’s public events have been canceled until at least Saturday, but he remains engaged, even signing off on decisions from the clinic.

As the world waits for news of his recovery, Pope Francis is receiving prayers and well-wishes from worshipers across Argentina, Italy, and the Vatican.
