President Trump’s administration is reshaping the programming of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which he took control of last week. The new plan includes a celebration of Christ during December, according to Richard Grenell, the center’s new president.
Grenell said that this “big change” would be a huge celebration of the birth of Christ at Christmas, aligning with the festive season’s main theme. This event is part of Trump’s efforts to solidify control over the institution.
The Kennedy Center has hosted various Christmas-themed events in the past, including “A Candlelight Christmas” by the Washington Chorus and “Go Tell It,” a Christmas celebration by the Alfred Street Baptist Church.
However, Ms. Rutter, the center’s former president, left under controversy after Grenell took over. Mr. Trump had previously purged the board of all Biden appointees and installed himself as chairman.
The center is funded partially by federal government aid, with $43 million earmarked for operations and maintenance. However, the new administration claims that they will not compromise on public input if they receive public money.
Grenell stated that he would welcome certain artists at the center, but emphasized the importance of attracting big-name performers who can bring in revenue. The Manhattan Theater Club announced that it will not bring a play to the Kennedy Center next month due to financial circumstances.
Renowned artists such as Issa Rae and Renée Fleming had previously canceled engagements or resigned their positions as advisers after Trump took control. Grenell maintained that the center would be able to attract top talent, but his vision for the institution aligns with Trump’s slogan “Make art great again.”
