Trump Proposes Displacement of Palestinians in Gaza

US President Donald Trump first suggested displacing Palestinians from Gaza five days after taking office on January 25, sparking international criticism.

Trump initially proposed that Jordan and Egypt take in Palestinians from Gaza, with the aim of building housing for them in a different location where they could live in peace. However, his plan was met with rejection from both countries.

In a February 4 press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump suggested permanently displacing Palestinians from Gaza, stating that they should get “a good, fresh, beautiful piece of land” and the US would provide funding to build it. The proposal also included a U.S. takeover of Gaza, with neighboring countries responsible for taking in Palestinians.

Trump’s aides later walked back some of his statements, saying Palestinians should be temporarily relocated while Gaza is rebuilt. However, Trump continued to assert that Palestinians would not have a right of return under his plan.

Despite reiterating his proposal, Trump eventually stated on social media that the US would not need soldiers in Gaza and that Palestinians would be resettled in safer communities with new homes.
