The Trump administration has directed the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to disconnect its electric vehicle charging stations as part of the president’s agenda to roll back progress on EVs and clean energy.
An email obtained by Inside Climate News reveals that GSA will cancel contracts for the charging stations, leading to their shutdown. The move affects over 800 federal buildings, including national laboratories, Veterans Affairs, NASA, and military bases, which offer electric vehicle chargers.
The decision is a setback for the program, which aims to address the climate crisis through zero-emission fleet vehicles. According to a 2022 Government Accountability Office report, the federal government needs around 100,000 charging ports to support widespread EV use.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is leading Trump’s government efficiency efforts, owns the country’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, making the move ironic given his company’s involvement in promoting EVs.
