Meta Layoffs Hit 3,115 Employees Across Multiple Teams

Meta began cutting thousands of jobs last week, affecting roughly 5% of its workforce. Business Insider obtained internal documents showing the teams and roles hardest hit by the cuts. The data shows that teams under Tom Alison, Facebook’s head, had 335 job cuts.

The records list 3,115 employees hit by the cuts, a significant majority of the 5% affected — equivalent to about 3,600 workers — who were laid off. Among them, the Horizon team saw 244 employee cuts, reporting to Vishal Shah, the vice president of Metaverse under Reality Labs.

Other heavily impacted teams included those under Carmine Arabia, with 195 roles eliminated, and Lori Goler’s group, which saw 189 administrative roles cut. The data center strategy team also lost 186 roles, while the engineering for monetization team had 180 cuts.

The organization under Peng Fan, its vice president of engineering for monetization, was hit the hardest, with primarily software engineers affected. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company would backfill roles cut in an effort to target “low performers.” The group reporting to Alex Himel, the vice president of augmented reality, had 141 employees cut.

The layoffs are part of a larger effort to reshape the workforce and focus on the metaverse ambitions. In November, Meta’s chief technology officer, Andrew Bosworth, called 2025 a make-or-break year for the company’s metaverse efforts.
